H2 Therapy for Parkinson’s: Pilot StudyScientific Research
Pilot study of H2 therapy in Parkinson’s disease: A randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial
Abstract
Background
Oxidative stress is associated with the progression of Parkinson’s disease (PD). Recent studies have confirmed that molecular hydrogen (H2) is a potent antioxidant in cultured cells and animal models. Drinking H2-dissolved water (H2-water) reduces oxidative stress and improves Parkinson’s disease characteristics in model animals.
Methods
In this pilot, placebo-controlled, randomized, double-blind, parallel-group clinical study, the authors evaluated the efficacy of H2 water in Japanese patients with Parkinson’s disease treated with levodopa. Participants drank 1,000 ml of H2 water or mock water daily for 48 weeks.
Results
The President-Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) score improved in the H2 water group (n=9) (median, -1.0; mean ± SD, -5.7 ± 8.4) compared to the UPDRS score in the placebo group Worsening (n = 8) (median 4.5; mean ± SD 4.1 ± 9.2). Despite the smallest number of patients and short study duration, the difference was significant (P < 0.05).
Conclusion
The results showed that drinking H2 water was safe and well tolerated, and patients in the H2 water group had a significant improvement in their overall UPDRS score. © 2013 Movement Disorders Association

Pilot study of H2 therapy in Parkinson’s disease: A randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial
Abstract
Background
Oxidative stress is associated with the progression of Parkinson’s disease (PD). Recent studies have confirmed that molecular hydrogen (H2) is a potent antioxidant in cultured cells and animal models. Drinking H2-dissolved water (H2-water) reduces oxidative stress and improves Parkinson’s disease characteristics in model animals.
Methods
In this pilot, placebo-controlled, randomized, double-blind, parallel-group clinical study, the authors evaluated the efficacy of H2 water in Japanese patients with Parkinson’s disease treated with levodopa. Participants drank 1,000 ml of H2 water or mock water daily for 48 weeks.
Results
The President-Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) score improved in the H2 water group (n=9) (median, -1.0; mean ± SD, -5.7 ± 8.4) compared to the UPDRS score in the placebo group Worsening (n = 8) (median 4.5; mean ± SD 4.1 ± 9.2). Despite the smallest number of patients and short study duration, the difference was significant (P < 0.05).
Conclusion
The results showed that drinking H2 water was safe and well tolerated, and patients in the H2 water group had a significant improvement in their overall UPDRS score. © 2013 Movement Disorders Association
